Erie police have apprehended Walter J. Hatcher, 55, in connection with two attempted burglaries in the early hours of June 11. Surveillance footage and tips from the public were crucial in identifying Hatcher, who is now being investigated for possible links to other recent burglaries in Erie.
Hatcher faces charges, including two first-degree felony counts of burglary, stemming from incidents on Marsh Street and Cherry Street. According to police reports, both attempts occurred in quick succession, targeting homes where female residents were asleep. At one location, he allegedly took items from a shed.
Surveillance video captured Hatcher’s actions: he tried to enter a Marsh Street residence through a window but fled when unsuccessful. At the Cherry Street address, he opened a screen window but did not enter the home, leaving with a garbage bag containing unspecified items.
Erie police had sought the public’s help via their Facebook page, sharing surveillance images of the suspect. Tips from community members led to Hatcher’s identification and subsequent arrest on Erie’s west side.
As the investigation continues, Erie police are exploring whether Hatcher could be linked to other recent burglaries across the city. Lt. Earl Matson, head of the Erie Bureau of Police Burglary Unit, highlighted several incidents involving forced entry through windows, with stolen electronics and jewelry reported in various cases.
This arrest underscores ongoing efforts by Erie law enforcement to combat a surge in burglary incidents, underscoring the importance of community involvement in apprehending suspects and preventing further criminal activity.
