(Nebraska City) — A seasoned law enforcement official has stepped in as Nebraska City’s interim police chief.

Captain Lonnie Neeman took the oath of office at the city council meeting on Monday night. Neeman succeeds David Lacy, who retired this month after 43 years with the department, including the last 18 years as chief. Nebraska City Mayor Bryan Bequette shared with KMA News that Neeman is a long-standing member of the Nebraska City PD.

“He joined the PD 6 years after Chief Lacy did,” said Bequette. “Back in 1987-88, he started working his way up through the ranks as a sergeant. He has been the captain for some time, leading all investigations, collaborating with officers and sergeants to develop their investigative skills, following up on cases, and working with the courts. He’s been doing that for quite a while.”

Bequette stated that Neeman will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement for Lacy is found. Applications for the position are still being accepted.

“Right now, the job posting for the permanent position is open until the 26th,” he said. “It’s an internal posting, and we’re waiting for full-time department members to submit their applications by the end of the month. We have at least one application so far, and we expect a few more. That’s our current status.”

Bequette mentioned that Neeman is not expected to apply for the permanent chief’s position.

“He’s unsure about his retirement plans,” said Bequette. “He told me he wanted us to choose a chief who could serve long-term, which he is not interested in doing permanently. He is willing to help the city in an interim role and then transition to the new chief.”

Once the application period closes, Bequette said the list of applicants would be reviewed by the city’s public service commission. After their review, the names of qualified candidates will be sent to the city commissioners for a final decision. Bequette hopes to appoint a new police chief by the end of August.
