A man in his 40s was fishing in Florida when a shark bit him, badly injuring his arm, officials said. The attack happened around 11 a.m. on Friday at West Rock near the port of Fernandina, north of Jacksonville close to the Florida-Georgia border.
A deputy from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office boarded the man’s boat and put a tourniquet on his right arm to stop the bleeding. The deputy then drove the boat to shore, where rescue teams were waiting. The man was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition but is expected to recover.
This incident follows another shark attack in Hawaii, where a well-known surfer and lifeguard, Tamayo Perry, was killed by a shark on Sunday. Perry, 49, had been a lifeguard since 2016 and was a surf coach who competed in the Pipeline Master Trials. He appeared in the 2002 movie “Blue Crush” and episodes of “Hawaii Five-O” and “The Bridge.”
Perry’s wife, Emilia, told ABC News, “The world knew Tamayo as a surfer and an actor, but to those who knew him best, he was a man of deep faith … now taken too soon. I feel so upset and devastated. But I also have a weird calmness in my heart knowing that he’s in a better place.”
