North Vernon, Indiana – On Friday afternoon, the North Vernon Police Department (NVPD) asked the Indiana State Police (ISP) from the Versailles Post to start looking into the death of a person who was in their custody.
Earlier that day, around 5:50 a.m., NVPD officers went to a house on Hoosier Street because of a domestic disturbance. This was the second time they had been called to that house.
After investigating at the scene, the officers decided to take Timothy J. Fugate, a 41-year-old man from North Vernon, to the hospital called Ascension St. Vincent Jennings for a medical check-up.
While they were taking him to the hospital, Fugate had a medical emergency. When they arrived at the hospital, he was not responding. Medical staff tried to treat him for about 40 minutes, but unfortunately, he passed away.
The NVPD then called the ISP and asked them to start an investigation into Fugate’s death while he was in their custody.
Fugate’s body was taken to Hamilton County, Ohio, for an autopsy to find out the exact cause of death, which is still being determined.
